The following is an extract from the Lions International magazine reporting on the results of a survey carried out on reasons for the growing reduction in Lions membership.
HORIZON RESEARCH RESULTS
A big ‘thank-you’ to all those Lions who recently took part in either the on-line member-research or filled in the hard-copy version of the research paper. The Horizon Research Company has now received all completed papers, tabulated the results and, together with the earlier public research about Lions Clubs, formed some conclusions about our Association here in New Zealand.
Some interesting facts have surfaced:
• 60% of us have been a member of Lions for between 11 and 40 years
• Nearly 80% of members are aged 60 years +
• Only 1.5% of our members are under the age of 40 years
• Lions Clubs are the most recognised active community service group in NZ
• 12% of the responding public said that they had considered joining a community service group
• Nearly 50% of public responses said they were prepared to volunteer time
• 31% of our membership play golf
• 46% of our members are retired
• Although only 2% of members were active swimmers over 89% enjoyed watching swimming (either Olympics or with grandchildren at the local school)
• Nearly 50% of respondents said that they will remain a member for life
• By far the majority of the public supported Lions Clubs involvement with schools and programmes for children
• A very high 85% of our member respondents contribute between 1 – 5 hours per week in other community related activities
Although the public perception was that Lions Clubs were male-based we now boast a membership base of close to 30% women members
Unless Lions Clubs strive to lower their average membership age our Association will diminish in both members and community service to the point that we will no longer exist!
Your Multiple District Council of Governors has undertaken an analysis of the research results and is in the process of developing a strategy to grow our Association to better serve our communities. As this document develops all members will have the opportunity of further input and say on the future direction of Lions Clubs here in New Zealand.
The ‘under 40s’ age group is sadly lacking within our Association and there are many, many reasons for that – longer working hours, both parents working, economic times, etc etc. However what is abundantly clear from our research is that we, as Lions, fail to communicate with the ‘under 40s age group’ as, not unnaturally, all our friends and associates are around our own age of 60+!
